Sir Sōfele Kakala
(March 21, 1916 – September 30, 1991) was a legendary Tongan composer, educator, and punake (master of traditional song and dance). He is celebrated for revolutionizing Tongan music by harmonizing traditional Polynesian rhythms with Western classical and liturgical forms.
Musical Contributions & Legacy
Liturgical Innovation: He composed 12 full masses for the Catholic Church of Tonga, integrating Tongan voices and rhythms into the liturgy.
"Taimi Faka-Tonga": He is credited with introducing the concept of "Tongan Time," a unique six-quaver rhythmic pattern used in traditional lakalaka group dances (triplet /Tilipeleti).
Royal & Community Service: Beyond the church, he composed music for the Tongan Royal Family (collaborating with HM Queen Sālote III), various schools, and local villages.
Kava Social Club: He founded the globally recognized Kava Social Club, which eventually established 15 Fa'onelua Clubs in the United States alone.
Recognition & Honors
Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great: He was the first Tongan to be knighted by Pope John Paul II for his unmatched musical contributions to the Catholic Church.

Professional Career
Sir Sōfele spent 40 years as a teacher before being appointed music supervisor for the entire Diocese of Tonga. He also served as the long-time music director at St. Michael's Church in Lapaha.
